.....
Owen H. Lubbers, 85, a resident of Sheboygan Senior Community, died there Saturday, December 12, 2009 surrounded by his family.
Owen was born September 21, 1924 in Cedar Grove, WI. He attended Sheboygan Public Schools, graduating from North High School in 1943. Upon graduation, he served in the US Navy, with most of his time spent on the USS Catskill in the Pacific Ocean. After his Navy discharge, Owen attended the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He later received additional training which prepared him for his occupation as lighting manager at Honald & La Page for 30 years, retiring in 1989.
Over the years, Owen worked part time for the Sheboygan Recreation Department, helping with a variety of sports programs. On October 19, 1957, Owen was united in marriage to Marlice Eernisse at Hope Reformed Church. The couple resided on Bell Ave. and later, Sunflower Ave. Marlice preceded Owen in death on May 27, 2002.
Mr. Lubbers was a member of Hope Reformed Church where he served faithfully for many years. Owen was an Elder and the Clerk for the Consistory, providing leadership for a variety of committees, as well as taking care of the church grounds for a period of time. In addition to serving his church, Owen was a visible and dedicated volunteer in the Sheboygan area. He was a regular bell ringer for the Salvation Army, an usher at the Stefanie H. Weill Center, helped at the Sheboygan County Historical Society, delivered Meals on Wheels, and offered support for others through the Sheboygan County Department of Aging.
Owen was a man who saw "the glass half full" and lived his life by being a positive example to those that crossed his path. He was quick to offer a smile, extend help and offer a kind word. Owen will be greatly missed and will be remembered for being an avid sports fan, a long time tennis player, a successful gardener, regular cribbage player and interested in the environment and his natural surroundings. Owen was a family man and took great pride in his children's accomplishments and spending time with his extended family and friends throughout the world. This includes the Ameti Family, Jetmir and Neddmije and their children, Ilirian and Zana. Owen and his wife, Marlice were Alir and Zana's American Grandparents.
Survivors include his daughter, Sara and her husband, Ron Wiecki of Madison; step-grandchildren, Emily and Paul Wiecki; his son, Paul and his wife, Kathy of Key Biscayne, Florida; two brothers, John and his wife, Patricia of Sheboygan, and Robert and his wife, Susan of Billings Montana; a sister, Jean Nardelli of the Bronx, New York; a sister-in-law Val Lubbers of Bethesda, MD; and 14 nieces and nephews. Along with his wife, Marlice, Owen was preceded in death by his twin brother, William; his brother, Arthur; sisters, Elaine Lubbers and Marcia Leedom; a nephew, Stephen; a niece, Kim; and brother in-law, JC Nardelli. The family wishes to thank the Sheboygan Senior Community for their loving care over the past two years and to St. Nicholas Hospice.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Reformed Church, 612 Ontario Ave, Sheboygan WI, 53081. Rev. Bill Te Winkel, the Pastor, will officiate. Visitation will be held at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels on Friday from 4 – 6:00 P.M. and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be made to the Sheboygan Salvation Army or Hope Reformed Church.
