- Edwin's birth date and middle initial are from his Veteran's Burial Record. His death certificate names his father as 'Orasha' Steel but his mother's name was not known. No birth date was recorded in that document, his age given only as 75 years. He was widowed when he died, his occupation given as Stone Cutter, the informant named as Jennie Knight of 806 East Seventh St.
His occupation was also given as Stone Cutter when he was listed in the 1860 census of Phialdelphia. He was living in the household of a Robert and Ann Steel along with his siblings Martha, Robert, Ellwood, Sarah and John.
