Notes |
- Named as "Richard Leadum, son of John, 30 day Jul 1665" in his Sherburn-in-Elmet baptism record.
Richard is described as "of South Milford" in the record of his marriage to Hannah Pease in the records of the Monthly Meeting of York, Tadcaster Births, Marriages and Deaths, in Yorkshire, England:
Richard Leedome of South Milford took to wife Hannah Pease in a Public meeting of frds. at Sherburne on 7th day of 10th mos in ye presence of many witnesses.
Richard and Hannah's York Monthly Meeting marriage certificate describes him as being "of South Milford" and his father John Leedom as "late of South Milford". Hannah's father William Pease was "late of Fishlake". The first signer of the certificate after Richard and Hannah themselves in a section marked as 'Relations' was John Leedom, signed with 'his mark'. Since his father John was described as deceased this John Leedom may have been a brother of Richard.
There are Monk Fryston parish register records of a John Letham "of Milford". He had a son Henry born in 1651 and a son John born in 1657. Perhaps Richard was another son of this John Letham.
An additional reference is found in Yorkshire Meeting records where three children of William Pease and his former wife, Mary, are named. Among them is Hannah Pease, born 20 Nov 1675 and "married at Sherborne, 7 Oct 1701, to Richard, son of John Ludome, or Ludham."
Richard Leedom (Leedham), emigrating from England in 1712, requested a certificate to remove himself and his family from York, England MM (copy of certificate in book, p. 5), certificate signed 4d, 2 mo 1712 (4 Apr 1712). The certificate was received and ordered to be recorded in Middletown MM Minutes dated 3 Dec 1714. He was named in this record as Richard 'Leedham'. The York certificate was signed by: George Stabler, William White junr, William White, Robert Adam, John, Nehemiah Morley, Marmaduke Boone, Edward Stabler, Timothy Hudson, John Rowland, Thomas Hammond, Stephen Thompson, William Cockshaw, Thomas Etherington, Robert Ward, Joseph Todd
Records of Middletown MM show that on '1 Dec 1738', Richard and his son William applied for a certificate of removal to Abington MM. It was granted Mar 1739. As there is no mention of Hannah, she had presumably died by then. In 1740 Richard is reported to Abington MM as having married a second time without approval of the meeting and was removed from the roll. - The Leedom Family
Middletown MM record dated 1 Mar 1739
George Shaw appearing signifies that neither he nor his brother find nothing to object that Richard Leathem may have a certificate as friends may see proper & also at this meeting his son William Leathem appeared & requested a Certificate of Removal to Abbington in order to which Cuthbert Hayhurst & Robert Stockdale are appointed to make inquiry concerning him as is usual in such case and make a report at next meeting.
Abington MM minutes dated 26th of 11th Mo, 1740
"Complaint is exhibited against Richard Leatham who has married a woman contrary to the decent orderly rules established in the Society and being treated with according to our Discipline's Rules, Refused to make any acknowlegment for the same, But rather declines to be Disowned by ??? ??. Wherefore it is the sense of this Mg, that the said Richard Leatham be Disowned from being a Member of our Christian society until he finds his way clear to acknowledge & condemn his misconduct, to the satisfaction of this Meeting."
Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, vol 34, no 3, p. 203, "Elopements and other Miscreant Deeds of Women":
Pennsylvania Gazette, 14 Dec 1742: "Whereas, Mary, the Wife of Richard Leadame, hath misused her said Husband, and doth run him in debt unnecessarily; this is to warn all Persons against trusting her on his Account, for he will not pay Debts she shall contract after the Date hereof. Richard Leadame"
17 Mar 1742/43: "Friend Franklin: I Have again Necessity for Troubling thy News-Paper, about Mary, my Wife: It was Force that made me comply with publishing the last Advertisement in thy Paper. Pray insert in thy Paper now, that she abuses me her Husband so much that I cannot live with her: And I forwarn all Persons from Trusting her on my Account, after the Date hereof. Richard Leadame"
This notice was repeated twice more on Mar 24 and 31.
I've found no record or mention of his death which, according to The Leedom Family, occurred in 1744.
In "Biographical Annals of Montgomery County, PA", edited by Ellwood Roberts, the entry on Dr. Joseph Leedom states that he is a descendant of Richard Leedom who emigrated from Micklefield, England in 1712. [Micklefield is only about two miles west of Sherburn-in-Elmet.]
History of Bucks County by J. H. Battle, p. 1017, biography of great-grandson Jesse Leedom, born 1822: "His paternal great-grandfather was Richard Leedom, who was a son of one of three brothers who emigrated to this country from England about the time of Penn's second visit, in the early part of the last century." [the unsubstantiated 'three brothers' story again...!]
Book of Biographies, leading citizens of Bucks County, Penna., pub. 1899, p. 185, footnote in biography of Thomas Briggs:
The first of the Leedoms to come to this country was Richard Leedom and family which was in 1712; they located at Middletown, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits. He brought his certificate from York, England, Monthly Meeting, February 4, 1712.
The following transcription is from a photocopy kindly sent to me by Charles E. G. Pease, a cousin descended from Thomas, brother to my 7G grandmother, Hannah Pease.

Sherburn in Elmet parish records, IGI batch P018831, also show the christening of the children of an Allen Leedam: Ann on 18 Oct 1674 and William on 14 Mar 1678.
Another William Leatham, son of Anthonie, was christened the same day, 30 Jul 1665, as Richard Leedom of this record.
Manuscripts of the History of the Scott Family, Page 77, [Historical Southern Families CD] has this interesting note. A transcription is printed of the Certificate of Removal for Abraham Scott from Monthly Mens' Meeting at Woodhall, Cumberland, England dated 22nd day, 6th month 1722. It is followed with a list of names of persons accompanying him on his voyage to Philadelphia. Among them is named "Richard Leedham, from York, 2-4-1712". Dates next to other names range from 1701 to 1717 and appear to refer to certificate dates. The date with Richard Leedham is, in fact, the date of his Certificate of Removal from York Monthly Meeting.
