- Named as 'Marguarett Leedam' in her son Richard Leedom Kerr's 1917 IL death certificate. This is the first and only mention I've found of her maiden name.
Margaret and her husband were both baptised as adults at Neshaminy Presbyterian Church of Warwick on 11 May 1845. Their 12 year old daughter Mary L. was baptised later that same year.
Margaret, age 86 and widowed, was living with her daughter Ann Bowman and her husband Joseph in Arcola in 1900. Margaret stated she'd had five children, two of whom were living in Jun 1900 when the census was taken.
Margaret's birth date is from a photo of the tombstone shared with her husband John Kerr. The photo and a death notice in the Mattoon Daily Journal, 22 Jun 1904, posted on FAG:
Old Resident Dead
Arcola, June 22. — Mrs. Margaret Kerr died Sunday morning at the home of her son, Richard Kerr, on South Locust street. The deceased was over 90 years old, and for nearly forty years has lived in Arcola. Mrs. Kerr leaves many friends to mourn her loss, as she was loved and respected by all who knew her. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock on Monday afternoon, Rev. A. A. White in charge.
Another death notice in the Daily Review of Decatur, IL also states she died at the home of her son, Richard Kerr, on Locust street, at the age of over 90 years. She had lived in Arcola for nearly forty years.
Margaret's tombstone photo at Find a Grave, shared with her husband John and apparently broken and fallen from its base, gives her exact birth date and states she was 'born in Bucks Co Penn'.
I do not have a document that proves Margaret was the daughter of Richard Leedom and Ann Sterling and will probably never find one. But there were very close ties between the Leedom and Kerr family, with every adult child of Richard and Ann using the name Kerr as a middle name for at least one of their own children. I've found documentation for only two of their children leaving gaps for several other presumed children. I welcome any documentation either proving or disproving these relationships.
