Notes |
- He is buried in a military section at Crystal Springs Cemetery. The plot has two other markers: one for 'Mother' Nancy Kimball 1826-1914; and one for Christine Kimball Mar 19, 1855-Jul 1, 1922 (Christine would be Christine Sebole, Walter's second wife; and 'Mother' Nancy is Nancy McIntyre, Walter's father's second wife - but not the mother of Walter).
Walter was a corporal in Co. H, 1st Mich. E&M (Engineers and Mechanics). He enlisted on Sep 16, 1862 at Jackson, Jackson Co. MI and was discharged on Dec 3, 1862 at Louisville KY - at the time he enlisted he resided in Osseo, Hillsdale Co. MI. He was wounded at the battle of Perryville on Oct 8, 1862 by two minnie-balls. One of the balls was removed but the other was not. That second ball was listed as the cause of his death many years later. After the war he lived in Iowa for twenty years, moving to Benton Township, Berrien MI in 1887 where he was a farmer. Pension records describe him as 5' 6 3/4", (another record says 6' 6 3/4"), light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
The 1884-85 'Iowa Gazetteer and Business Directory' lists Walter F. Kimball a grocer in Goldfield, Wright IA (a Horace W. McIntyre is listed as working at JS Baden & Co General Store and an Amos McIntyre working at a meat market. Amos was the brother of Walter Kimball's step-mother Nancy (McIntyre) Kimball, Horace W. was Amos's son). 1885 IA State census lists Walter a widower at Goldfield, grocer, with children Cora and Otto, both born Wright Co IA.
