Notes |
- At age 19, Sara resided with her sister Carrie and her husband George Taggart in Philadelphia Co. in 1910. Also in the household was Sara and Carrie's mother, Sara Crowell.
I never met my paternal grandmother, at least not when I was old enough to have remembered. I always wondered under what circumstances she met my grandfather. Sara's grandfather, Joseph Crowell, was a teamster, hauling merchandise from Philadelphia to Tennessee. Her father was a railroad engineer on the Kansas Pacific Railroad and later the Southerland Railroad. Maybe her grandfather's connection with businesses in Philadelphia allowed them to meet, somehow, and marry in Philadelphia in 1918.
She resided in Bloomfield, Essex, NJ when she died.
From her obituary in an unidentified newspaper: "Mrs. Sara Alys Leedom, of 27 Fairway, Bloomfield, NJ, died Saturday at Passaic General Hospital. She was 66."
Her full obituary was published in The Philadelphia Inquirer on 25 Mar 1958:
Mrs. Sara Alys Leedom, a former Philadelphian, died Saturday in the Passaic (N. J.) Hospital. She was 66. Her husband, Laurie M. Leedom, is assistant divisional engineer of the Newark (N. J.) Division of Water Supply and formerly operated the old Laurie Hotel here. Also surviving are a son, S. Craig Leedom; a daughter, Miss Mary Elizabeth Leedom, and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:30 P. M. tomorrow at Andrew J. Bair and Son, 3925 Chestnut st. Burial will be in Haverford Friends Cemetery, Oakmont.
Elizabeth, New Jersey Then and Now by Robert J. Baptista, 2nd Edition 2015:
Former Laurie Hotel and Cafe on East Jersey St
Laurie's Hotel and Cafe was one of several hotels operating in Elizabethport in 1919, according to the City Directory. It was built at 78 East Jersey St. about 1916 by owner William Laurie. These small hotels were popular with single or transient workers in nearby industries like Singer. They usually had a restaurant or a saloon on the ground floor. The three-story building is now the Elizabeth House apartments.
