We now have three genealogy files on this site: our main database which is a combined ‘Ives-Leedom’ tree, plus two additional working trees with so-far unconnected people I've found along the way, ‘Leedoms-unknown’ and ‘Netherlands-unknown’. All of the Search results will identify which tree contains the individual or place in question.

Different sources sometimes have conflicting information and there are undoubtedly a few typographical errors in here as well. Please feel free to send us any corrections to errors you may find in our files. Additions are always welcome too!

  • Name William Ives
Born of London, England Find all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Male
Died Bef 6 Jun 1648  New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut Find all individuals with events at this location  [1
    Notes
    • Will dated 3 Apr 1648, probated 7 Nov 1648. William died about 6 Jun of that year for Richard Miles and Roger Allen were appointed "to prise the estate of William Ives deceased" on 6 Jun 1648.

The English ancestry of William is not known (as of 1932 when the 'Genealogy of the Ives Family' by Arthur Coon Ives was published). It is thought William may be of the Ives family of Norfolk ENG and that he was born in Northamptonshire in 1607. Arthur Coon Ives speculated that William may have been the "Wm Joes - age 28" listed on the manifest of the ship Truelove and that he emigrated in 1635, though this would mean he would have been around Boston for a couple years before accompaning Rev. John Davenport to New Haven CT in early 1638, and there are no records of him in Boston. Two later books, 'The New Haven Colony' by Isabell MacBeath Calder (published by Yale Univ. Press in 1934) and 'Ship Passenger Lists' by Carl Boyer (which references the Calder book), list William Ives as a passenger on the ship Hector, which arrived at Boston on 26 Jun 1637 from London. The passengers on this ship were members of Rev. Davenport's parish of St. Stephen's on Coleman Street of London. The Hector then went to New Haven Colony in early 1638 with the Rev. Davenport and his congregation. Calder's book lists William Ives as an inhabitant of the parish St. Stephen's on Coleman Street, before 1637. A transcription of the Hector from Boyer's 'Ship Passenger Lists' by Molly Kernan, and posted on the Olive Tree Website (I haven't seen the Boyer book) lists, with the exception of the families of Rev. Davenport and Theophilus Eaton, only the male passengers - and it does not give their ages, spouse names or list any children. We do not know from this how old William Ives was when he emigrated (his birth year of abt. 1607 given in many online genealogies probably figured from the "Wm Joes - age 28" on the Truelove in 1635). The fact that William was in London in 1637 does not necessarily mean he was from London, only that he was in London before he emigrated. His ancestry, so far as I know, is still unknown.

The maiden name of William's wife Hannah is not given in the Ives genealogy nor in 'Families of Ancient New Haven' by Jacobus, but many believe she may have been Hannah Dickerman, daughter of Thomas Dickerman of Dorchester MA ('Beach Family Reunion' (?) and many listings in the LDS IGI & Ancestral Files). Some online genealogies list Hannah as the daughter of Thomas Dickerman's son Abraham, but Abraham, born abt 1634, could not have been her father. There are reasons to doubt she was Thomas Dickerman's daughter, though maybe it can't be ruled out entirely. 'Dickerman Genealogy, Descendants of Thomas Dickerman, an early settler of Dorchester, Massachusetts' by Edward Dwight Dickerman (1897), 'with Supplement added by George Sherman Dickerman' in 1922, does not list a daughter of Thomas Dickerman named Hannah. This does not mean that Hannah wasn't a daughter of Thomas though. It is the male descendants who leave the most records and daughters lines are frequently not followed up.

Casting further doubt that Hannah was a Dickerman, or at least closely related to Thomas or son Abraham Dickerman, is the fact that Hannah's son Samuel Bassett, by her second marriage to William Bassett, married Mary Dickerman, daughter of Abraham Dickerman (though it must be admitted that 1st cousin marriages did occur at the time - and, yes, in New England).

Since the Hectors passenger list does not list the spouses or children of the passengers, could William have been married in England and brought his wife with him? (this is just a question). The earliest record of William with a probable spouse is a 1639 census of New Haven Colony which showed two members in his family. William and Hannah had four children - only four are referenced in his 1648 will and only son John mentioned by name - "Eldest sonn", and "my three other children", though he specifies "youngest sonn" and "daughters" - meaning they had two sons and two daughters.

An article in the Connecticut Nutmegger, 'The American Ancestry of Huldah Jackson, Wife of Tryal Tanner of Cornwall, CT' by Mary Banning Friedlander, article dated Sep 1999, Vol. 32, pages 193-205, states again that William Ives was b. abt. 1605 and emmigrated on the Truelove in 1635 and to New Haven in 1638. The article cites 'New Haven Vital Records' as source that William Ives and Hannah "Dickerman" married in New Haven on 4 Jun 1639 (pg 200) and that Hannah is "thought to be the daughter of Thomas Dickerman and Eleanor Whitington". Page 201, in a section about the Dickerman family, states it "is thought that Hannah was his eldest child, and was born in England before they came to America", Hannah "assumed born about 1621 in England".
      -------------------------
'Boyd's Marriage Indexes, 1538-1850', a transcription, lists the marriage of a William Ives to "Beat Tomas" in 1636 at "St. Steven Coleman Street" in London - source of record is parish registers. Another transcription, though it doesn't name the church, states William Ives m. Beatrice Thomas in London on 7 Feb 1636 (both transcriptions found at FindMyPast.com (on a "free trial" subscription)).

    • Marriage date of "abt 1639 at New Haven" is based on a statement in the Ives genealogy by Arther Coon Ives: "William and 'Hannah' must have been married coincident with the beginnings of the settlement, for the census of 1639 indicates that there were then two members of this family". An article in the Sep 1999 issue of The Connecticut Nutmegger gives a marriage date of 4 Jun 1639 (transcription give the year to be 1739 but that is assumed to be in error). It states that Hannah is "thought" to be the daughter of Thomas Dickerman and that she was born about 1621 in England.
