Birth |
Abt 1757 |
of Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts |
Gender |
Male |
Death |
Bef 1820 |
prob Amsterdam, Montgomery, New York |
Notes |
- His birthplace is variously given as Pittstown, Pittsfield or Bayfield MA. May have been known as 'John' according to Van Wagonen's Stearns Genealogy - listed as Ezra in Town of Amsterdam records and as Ezra J. on wife Desire's tombstone. Moved to Amsterdam NY in 1789 "being one of the earliest settlers in that section of the country" - though that date may be off by a couple years.
Served in the Revolutionary War and was appointed sutler at Fort Ann(e) after being wounded.----- Fort Anne was in New York on Wood Creek - about 25 m. north of Saratoga and 30 m. south of Ft. Ticonderoga. (Atlas of American History - James Adams, ed. Plate 72 "Burgoyne's Invasion 1777"). 'The History of Pittsfield MA' by Smith lists an Ezra Stearns who marched to from Pittsfield to Fort Ann with Capt. John Strong and Lieut. Caleb Goodrich on Jun 30, 1777, and dismissed Jul 26, 1777. He is listed as Overseer of Highways in 1794 Amsterdam town record - spelled Ezra Sternes. Another record, Names of Ratable Persons and dated May 24, 1794, lists Ezra's worth as 23 pounds real estate, 5 pounds personal estate - spelled Ezra Stearns. The Van Wagenen 'Stearns' genealogies gives his death date as 14 Feb 1835 but that is wife Desire's death date. The 1820 census does not list Ezra - though Desire listed - so it is possible he died before 1820. (Information on this Stearns family in the Van Wagenen genealogy of the Stearns family is in the Appendix of Vol. 2.. The appendix is information that was submitted to her by families - so any errors in it is not due to her research - and was placed in the appendix because Van Wagenen could not link those families to the Isaac, Charles and Nathaniel who were the subjects of the 2 volumes.).
Vital Records of Pittsfield MA list marriage of Ezra to Desire Baker on 3 Jan 1782 - which would indicate that Ezra was from Pittsfield (though birthplace is still unknown). Other records may be those of a 'possible' siblings (John, Jasiel, Rhoda and Ruth), marriage and death records including two children (unnamed) of 'Ezra'. The following from an email dated 26 May 1999:
Ezra Stearns married Desire Baker Jan 3, 1782

Rhoda Stearns m. Job Whitney Jan or Jul 5, 1787
