We now have three genealogy files on this site: our main database which is a combined ‘Ives-Leedom’ tree, plus two additional working trees with so-far unconnected people I've found along the way, ‘Leedoms-unknown’ and ‘Netherlands-unknown’. All of the Search results will identify which tree contains the individual or place in question.

Different sources sometimes have conflicting information and there are undoubtedly a few typographical errors in here as well. Please feel free to send us any corrections to errors you may find in our files. Additions are always welcome too!

    Notes
    • Virtually every mention of William Jeanes and Esther Brewer states that he and/or they were originally from England and settled at New Rochelle, Westchester Co, NY at some unknown date. It is also said that the Jeanes family was originally from LaRochelle in France. This was all passed down in my family as well since William and Esther are my 6G grandparents.

However, in literally decades of research by me, my father, and my grandfather, no records or documentation of any kind have ever been found, to my knowledge, that substantiate any part of this migration. And I've never found even a hint about the Brewer family.

The earliest record I've found of William and Esther is the baptism of their daughter Mary in the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1713: "Mary Daughter of William Jeans". So it appears they did not arrive as Quakers though they had apparently converted by at least 1737 when Esther died and was buried in Abington Friends Graveyard. Abington MM records give the birth dates of two of their children, Joseph and Jacob, but those are given in connection to the births of the children of Joseph Jeanes and his wife Sarah Roberts who were all certainly Quakers by that time, about 1740. William belonged to Abington MM when in Apr 1739 he declared his intention to marry Elizabeth Baker of Middletown MM.

A wonderful and informative blog (for which I've never been able to find an author's name), 'Taking the Longer View', presents some interesting information about possible origins of the Jeanes family:
There is some circumstantial evidence for William's origin and parentage. His oldest son was named Joseph. In February 1713, William and Mary Jeanes were the administrators of the estate of Joseph Jeanes of Bucks County. Joseph was either William's brother, or— less likely— his father. In either case— brother or father— it is plausible that William's own father was named Joseph. In fact the baptismal records of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, show a Joseph and Elizabeth Jeynes with four children born at the right time: Elizabeth in 1681, Joseph in 1683, William in 1687, Nathaniel in 1691.7 Tewkesbury had a Quaker community, with a cemetery reportedly dating to 1660.8 Jeanes is a common name in Gloucestershire, and there is no evidence yet that this is the family of the immigrant William, but the pattern fits well. - http://takingthelongerview.org/index.php/2020/05/08/william-jeanes-and-his-wife-esther/

Philadelphia Will Book B, p. 98, Admin on the estate of Joseph Jeanes, died intestate, granted 13 Feb 1712/13 to William Jeanes of Bucks Co. This could be a brother to William; it's the only mention of a Jeanes I've found that is not of William and Esther's family.

      Middletown Monthly Meeting records:
5 Apr 1739 (5d 2mo, 1739) - William Janes and Elizabeth Baker intend to marry; he belongs to Abbington (sic) monthly meeting.

7 Jun 1739 (7d 4mo, 1739) - Marriage of William Janes and Elizabeth Baker accomplished 24th of last month.

      Abington MM records
William Janes of ye Manor of Moreland in ye County of Philadelphia Dec'd the 10th of ye 4th month 1747
Esther Janes Wife of ye sd William Janes Dec'd ye 22 of ye 1 mo 1737

William wrote his will 13 Apr 1747 naming his wife Elizabeth and children Joseph, James, Isaac, Jacob, Mary, Esther and Rebecca. He left his "son Joseph the plantation and tract he now lives on, containing one hundred acres of land, situated in the Manor of Moreland". He also left Joseph three acres of land on Southampton Creek, he paying to his brother James, if he ever arrives in Pennsylvania, L25: three pounds the first year, three pounds each year after for six years, and four pounds the eighth year.

He next left his son Isaac a tract of land containing 170 acres, paying his brother James L50 in seven annual payments; "provided that Isaac be twenty-one years of age before the arrival of James." To his youngest son, Jacob, William left "the tract whereon I now dwell, containing 125 acres". William's wife Elizabeth was to enjoy all the profits until Jacob was 21 years of age. Elizabeth was also to have the interest of L150.

Daughter Mary Carrington was to have L150, and if she was not living that sum was to be divided between her children, William and Esther Walton. Mary also received the plantation upon which she was living until Isaac comes of age, save a piece of meadow to Esther and Rebecca. Daughters Esther and Rebecca each also received L140.

The will was proved in Philadelphia on 5 Aug 1747.

{Personal note: As a child my father often showed us children a little box with a square silver buckle and a note, in whose handwriting I do not know, describing it as "Silver shoe buckle belonging to William Jeanes". Sadly it was stolen after my father's death.)

      .....
William Sluby was executor of the will of a Nathaniel Jeanes of Penns Neck (Salem Co NJ) on 5 February 1702/3, New Jersey Archives, 1st ser., 23:257. He was William 'Slooby' of Philadelphia Co. when he conveyed to Jasper Yeates of Chester Co a 600 acre plantation on Lucas Point in Penns Neck on 21 July 1709 (unrecorded deed, Salem Co. Historical Society) I've found no connections at all between these NJ Jeanes and William and Esther though there may still be one.
