Notes |
- Washington and 'Betsy' are buried in plot B7 at Crystal Springs Cemetery. A Washington, an Alfred and a William Ives are listed in the 1870 MI census residing Victor, Clinton MI - pg 569 & 569R. Census image very difficult to read but does say Washington born in New York (Alfred and William also born NY, probably brothers of Washington). Though difficult to read the census also lists wife Betsy as b. NY. Ages difficult to make out, and names of two children impossible to read - though both male and b. MI. The same page of the 1870 census of Victor Township, Clinton MI lists John Morgan and wife Amy. John age 56 b. NY; Amy age 49 b. NJ (New Jersey). Given the close proximity to Washington and Betsy, this John probably Betsy's father. An 1864 plat map of Victor Township shows land owned by "J. Morgan" in section 30. Just to the south of that is listed "W. Ives", and to the NE "A. Ives' had land in section 19 (section 19 N of section 30).
1920 MI census Washington still residing at Victor MI, age 73, b. "MI" parents from NY. Census of sons William Mortimer (who went by Mortimer) and Edgar Herman (who went by Herman) say father b. "MI". Washington married to a Sarah A. age 77 b. MI, father from England, mother from NJ. Sarah was Sarah Ann (Pierson) Viges, widow of Philip Viges who died in Victor, Clinton MI in 1914. Information about Sarah, her 1st husband and their family is from an LDS Ancestral file of a descendant - so the information is probably correct and I have entered as such.
Washington's death record in Berrien Co, informant was his son "Lorenzo", names his parents as Amos and Marietta (Bronson) Ives. The name of his father as Amos is incorrect. His father was Warren Ives.
---
An LDS transcription of Clinton Co births lists Lorenzo Ives b. 15 Dec 1869 at Victor, son of G.W. and Betsey Ives (batch #C031725 - "extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record"). As this is the same date Lowell Harvey Ives was born to Washington and Betsey, this leads to the question of whether Washington was his first name. Possible his first name was George? (this birth record confirmed by an image of the record online through the LDS website. G.W. Ives listed as a "fiddler"; Betsey's birthplace listed as Orange Co NY). Every record of him lists him as Washington but going by one's middle name was pretty popular in this Ives family - all three of his sons used their first and middle names interchangably; an uncle of Washington's, Erastus Darwin Ives, switched to Darwin after 1850; Washington's death record lists his father as Amos - could Amos have been Warren's middle name, or even first? Possible Washington's name was George Washington Ives - there were two others in the pretty immediate family by that name (two nephews). In all records, I've found, of Washington and Betsey's son Lowell Harvey he is listed as either Lowell or Harvey. It's not hard to imagine he was named as Lorenzo at birth (after an uncle in Lansing, Tompkins NY), but was never known or went by that name.

- DeWitt Methodist records
Washington's sister Mary Jane married William Webb the same day, 19 Jul 1863, at DeWitt, Clinton MI (DeWitt Methodist). Appears to have been a double wedding. Minister for both was Charles Chick. Washington may have mis-stated his age at time of marriage. His age is recorded as 21, and 'Betsey' 19 - though he was actually 16 (and 9mo) and Betsey 18 at the time. William Webb, who married Mary Jane Ives the same day, also has an 'incorrect' age given for him. He was 25 but is recorded as 21.
