We now have three genealogy files on this site: our main database which is a combined ‘Ives-Leedom’ tree, plus two additional working trees with so-far unconnected people I've found along the way, ‘Leedoms-unknown’ and ‘Netherlands-unknown’. All of the Search results will identify which tree contains the individual or place in question.

Different sources sometimes have conflicting information and there are undoubtedly a few typographical errors in here as well. Please feel free to send us any corrections to errors you may find in our files. Additions are always welcome too!

Benoni Kimball

Male Cal 1814 - 1889  (~ 74 years)

Personal Information    |    Event Map    |    All

  • Name Benoni Kimball
Born Cal 6 Jul 1814  New York Find all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Male
Census 1840  Gaines, Orleans, New York Find all individuals with events at this location
    Federal Census
    • Possibly the "Benson" Kimball listed at Gaines that year: two males 15-19, two 20-29; one female 10-14 and one 20-29. If this is him with wife Ruth at Gaines (and both would have been in their 20s) I don't know who the other individuals would have been (Benoni's name was spelled BENANA and BENONA in later censuses which is the reason for thinking this could possibly be him).
Census 1850  Napoleon Twp, Jackson, Michigan Find all individuals with events at this location
    Federal Census
    • "Benana" Kimball and 2nd wife Nancy with sons Charles and Lewis, both listed as b. NY (though later censuses list Lewis b. MI), and sons Walter and Sylvester from Benoni's 1st marriage. Also listed with them is a Betsey Town (? - last name hard to read, possibly Town), age 26 from NY and Catherine Town age 2 b. NY. Could this Betsey be a sister of Nancy - her mother's name was Catherine.
Census 1860  Jefferson Twp, Hillsdale, Michigan Find all individuals with events at this location
    Federal Census
    • Catherine McIntyre, age 65 from NY listed with family - probably the mother of Nancy.
Census 1870  Rolling Prairie, Galena Twp, LaPorte, Indiana Find all individuals with events at this location
    Federal Census
    • "Benona", Nancy and their five children - Walter and Sylvester, children from Benoni's 1st marriage, were married and living elsewhere by then.
Census 1880  New Carlisle, St. Joseph, Indiana Find all individuals with events at this location
    Federal Census
    • Olive Twp, Benoni, Nancy, son Frederick and one line erased. Benoni b. NY, parents from ME and NY. Nancy b. NY, parents from RI and NY.
    Occupation Brickmaker
Died 23 Jan 1889  Franklin Twp, Pulaski, Indiana Find all individuals with events at this location
Buried Winamac Cemetery (aka: Crown Hill Cemetery), Winamac, Pulaski, Indiana Find all individuals with events at this location
    Notes
    • According to a biographical sketch of his son Sylvester in 'Twentieth Century History of Berrien County, Michigan' Benoni was born in VT and was a brick maker by trade, first in the employ of others and then on his own. This sketch also states he served in the Mexican War (1846-1848). He was a brick maker but every census record of him from 1850 to 1880 gives his birth place as NY - the 1880 census records his father's birth place as ME (looks like) and mother's as NY. Nothing further has been learned about his war service though if so he probably served out of NY.

He married first before 1840 to Ruth Fairfield, daughter of Walter and Mary (Harwood) Fairfield of Gaines, Orleans NY. They had two sons, Walter F. and Sylvester B., and wife Ruth died in 1846. About 1847 Benoni married, probably in NY, to Nancy McIntyre and they had five children: Charles, Lewis, Frances, Lorenzo and Frederick. The family moved to Jackson Co MI in 1849 where Benoni set up a brick making business near the state prison at Jackson (city). He later moved to Brooklyn, Jackson Co, and then to Hillsdale Co MI - establishing brick yards at both places. He then purchased a farm in Jefferson Township in Hillsdale. Sometime after he moved to Laporte Co IN and again ran a brick making business. He next went to Carlisle Hill where he again engaged in the manufacture of brick. He afterwards farmed forty acres near Winamac IN, where he lived until his death in 1889 (all of the above information is from his son Sylvester's biographical sketch - census records confirm the locations).

'Cemetery Transcriptions - Winamac and Monroe Twps Indiana, Book 6' give Benoni's death date as 23 Jan 1889 at age 74 yrs, 6 mo, 17 days - giving a calculated birthdate of 6 Jul 1814. He is buried at Winamac Cemetery (also known as Crown Hill Cemetery) in Winamac, Pulaski IN. Though his tombstone gives date of death as 23 Jan 1889, his death certificate at Pulaski Co gives it as 24 Jan 1889. Death certificate spells his name as "B. Kimble"; d. 24 Jan 1889 at N. Franklin Twp, Pulaski IN; age 72; married; died of heart disease. The certificate does not contain his birth date and place, his parents names, the name of his spouse nor the name of the informant for the record.

Benoni's parents are unknown but I am researching three possible candidates at present. One, though a long shot, is another Benoni Kimball born Jul 1790 at Milford, Worcester MA, son of Jonathan and Mary (Cheney) Kimball. The other two are Asa or Howland Kimball, sons of Stephen and Meriam (Howland or Stone) Kimball of Scituate, Providence RI. Asa was born 25 Dec 1778 and Howland born 30 Mar 1763. Both of these names appear in Herkimer Co NY census records in the early 1800s and at Orleans Co (then part of Genesee Co) NY census records in 1820 and 1830. Asa and Howland appear to be the only Kimballs in Orleans Co NY of age for one of them to have been Benoni's father and Benoni married Ruth Fairfield of Gaines is the reason for believing one of them to have been his father - and Benoni is probably the "Benson Kimball" listed at Gaines in 1840. 1820 and 1830 censuses show Asa with a son the right age to have been Benoni.
