La Grande Recorder Dies Here - Heart Attack Ends Long Term in Office For James E. Stearns
La Grande Evening Observer, February 4, 1939, front page
James Edward Stearns, who lacked but a few days of having served the city for twenty years as recorder and recorder-treasurer died at his home here last night of heart attack. Mr. Stearns, who was 71 years of age, was born in Wisconsin on June 24, 1867. He came to Union county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Stearns, in 1882. They settled in Cove. Mr. Stearns went to work for the city of La Grande on February 1, 1919 and moved to La Grande. HE was first the city recorder, continuing to serve as such when the city government was changed to the city manager type, and since 1931, he served in the joint capacity of recorder-treasurer. Mr. Stearn's tenure of office was in marked contrast for its honesty and the pleasantness of its relations to the public to the dishonesty that infested the office before he took it over. Mr. Stearns served as city manager several times between the periods of service of the regular managers. He was the oldest city employee in the point of service. He died at his home at 1009 Oak street. He had been in poor health the last five or since weeks and had not been able to be at his office regularly. Funeral services will be held at the Snodgrass Funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Cecil Hannan and the Cove Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, will be in charge of the services. He is survived by his wife, Bessie; a son, Lawton; a daughter, Mrs. Stuart Bennett of Wallace, Idaho; two sisters, Mae Stearns of La Grande and Mrs. Frances Daugherty of Cove. Burial will be in the family plot in the Cove cemetery.

- The 1930 census of Le Grande lists James as having married at age 41 and Elizabeth at age 31 - first marriage for each. This works out to a marriage date of about 1908. This is in error as James' marriage to Elizabeth was his 2nd marriage.
