News: Despite the Login on the Menu, no Login or Registration is required. We use this for administrative purposes only.

We now have three genealogy files on this site: our main database which is a combined ‘Ives-Leedom’ tree, plus two additional working trees with so-far unconnected people I've found along the way, ‘Leedoms-unknown’ and ‘Netherlands-unknown’. All of the Search results will identify which tree contains the individual or place in question.

Different sources sometimes have conflicting information and there are undoubtedly a few typographical errors in here as well. Please feel free to send us any corrections to errors you may find in our files. Additions are always welcome too!

    Notes
    • Mathias Holstein was born December 2, 1717, and died December 10, 1768, being buried at Swedes' church. He married Magdalena, daughter of Marcus Hulings, of Morlatton, which was a Swedish settlement near what is now Pottstown. Mathias Holstein was one of the leaders in erecting Swedes' church in 1760. His wife was carried on a squaw's back when young, and on her wedding day, her friends came down the river in canoes. She survived her husband many years. - Ellwood Roberts' Biographical Annals of Montgomery Co, p. 330

Matthias wrote his will on 10 Dec 1768 describing himself as, "of Upper Merrion in the County of Philadelphia". He named his three eldest daughters, Hannah, Rebecca, and Rachel, younger daughters Sarah and Mary, both under eighteen, his son Samuel, and his beloved wife Magdalen.

If you were standing across the Schuylkill River in Norristown looking over at Bridgeport in 1828, this is what you would have seen. In the early 1700s, Swedish settler Mats Holstein stretched a rope across the river, and the location became known as Swedes Ford. Then Holstein started a ferry service about 1760. Travelers on foot or on horseback often encountered a delay. The boat would be on the other side of the river and it was necessary to blow a horn to summon the ferryman who would be working at his farm. Travelers could find a pleasant wait at Holstein's Swedes Ford Tavern nearby. - King of Prussia Historical Society
