Notes |
- My father's chart states that the father of my 3G grandfather Tobias Nace was John, but I suspected his father was Jacob on the basis of a Jacob Nace residing in Tobias' household in the 1850 census Northern Liberties, Philadelphia Co. Jacob and a Margaret Nace are listed in the family household separated by four people including a different family (Haines).
Correspondent Robert Nace and I both believe that the name Haines in the 1850 census was recorded in error and should have been Hannis. Esther Nace, daughter of Tobias married Joseph Hannis. Birth dates for both of them in later census records match those for the "Haines" listings in 1850.
Confirmation of Jacob as the father of Tobias was received from Robert Nace who found the Philadelphia Public Ledger notice for Jacob Nace, father of Tobias Nace.
Death notice in the Public Ledger on 4 Sep 1852
On the 3d instant, Mr. Jacob Nace, in the 81st year of his age. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, from the residence of his son, Mr. Tobias Nace, Lilly Alley, below Green st, to-morrow (Sunday afternoon) at 3 o'clock.
Jacob's death certificate gives his father's name as Jacob and names his wife as Catharine. It gives his complete birth date (miraculously) and his Occupation is given as Stonemason. He died at "Lilly Alley, below Green, Phila" of "old age". Burial is stated to be at Oddfellow's Cemetery, Islington Lane.
In addition Robert provided the entries in the Philadelphia City Directory for 1810-1865 which included Jacob Sr, Jacob Jr and Tobias, occupations listed throughout the years as nailor, blacksmith, dealer, and ironmonger.
Jacob lived with his son Tobias in 1850 and perhaps as early as 1836 when he is not listed individually in the directory. His wife Catherine Margaret had died by 1833.
