News: Despite the Login on the Menu, no Login or Registration is required. We use this for administrative purposes only.

We now have three genealogy files on this site: our main database which is a combined ‘Ives-Leedom’ tree, plus two additional working trees with so-far unconnected people I've found along the way, ‘Leedoms-unknown’ and ‘Netherlands-unknown’. All of the Search results will identify which tree contains the individual or place in question.

Different sources sometimes have conflicting information and there are undoubtedly a few typographical errors in here as well. Please feel free to send us any corrections to errors you may find in our files. Additions are always welcome too!

    • Obituary in the Daily Press on 21 Jan 2001
Newport News (VA) - Herbert Leedom Broadbelt passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001. Herb was born in Llanerch, Pa., on April 7, 1917, son of Herbert Broadbelt and Mabel Free.

He worked at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia for 20 years designing steam and diesel engines until the company closed in 1954. He rescued the Baldwin Locomotive negative collection and provided rail fans worldwide with pictures until the collection was transferred to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. Many of his pictures are featured in railroad books today. He retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. as a designer.

Herb's train has finally left for Heaven. He loved his trains and enabled thousands to enjoy train history. He was a good and kind man who never received the credit he deserved. He had a difficult life and while he never had much, he shared what he had with others and was generous to friends and family.

He is survived by his loving wife and son and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Second Presbyterian Church, 201 Menchville Rd., Newport News. Donations to the church are preferred.
